1. അമിത്ഥായുടെ മകനായ യോനെക്കു യഹോവയുടെ അരുളപ്പാടു ഉണ്ടായതെന്തെന്നാല്

1. A message from the Lord came to Jonah. He was the son of Amittai. The Lord said,

2. നീ പുറപ്പെട്ടു മഹാനഗരമായ നീനെവേയിലേക്കു ചെന്നു അതിന്നു വിരോധമായി പ്രസംഗിക്ക; അവരുടെ ദുഷ്ടത എന്റെ സന്നിധിയില് എത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നു.

2. Go to the great city of Nineveh. Preach against it. The sins of its people have come to my attention.'

3. എന്നാല് യോനാ യഹോവയുടെ സന്നിധിയില്നിന്നു തര്ശീശിലേക്കു ഔടിപ്പോകേണ്ടതിന്നു പുറപ്പെട്ടു യാഫോവിലേക്കു ചെന്നു, തര്ശീശിലേക്കു പോകുന്ന ഒരു കപ്പല് കണ്ടു കൂലി കൊടുത്തു യഹോവയുടെ സന്നിധിയില്നിന്നു അവരോടുകൂടെ തര്ശീശിലേക്കു പോയ്ക്കളവാന് അതില് കയറി.

3. But Jonah ran away from the Lord. He headed for Tarshish. So he went down to the port of Joppa. There he found a ship that was going to Tarshish. He paid the fare and went on board. Then he sailed for Tarshish. He was running away from the Lord.

4. യഹോവയോ സമുദ്രത്തില് ഒരു പെരുങ്കാറ്റു അടിപ്പിച്ചു; കപ്പല് തകര്ന്നു പോകുവാന് തക്കവണ്ണം സമുദ്രത്തില് വലിയൊരു കോള് ഉണ്ടായി.

4. But the Lord sent a strong wind over the Mediterranean Sea. A wild storm came up. It was so wild that the ship was in danger of breaking apart.

5. കപ്പല്ക്കാര് ഭയപ്പെട്ടു ഔരോരുത്തന് താന്താന്റെ ദേവനോടു നിലവിളിച്ചു; കപ്പലിന്നു ഭാരം കുറെക്കേണ്ടതിന്നു അവര് അതിലെ ചരകൂ സമുദ്രത്തില് എറിഞ്ഞുകളഞ്ഞു. യോനയോ കപ്പലിന്റെ അടിത്തട്ടില് ഇറങ്ങി കിടന്നു നല്ലവണ്ണം ഉറങ്ങുകയായിരുന്നു.

5. All of the sailors were afraid. Each one cried out to his own god for help. They threw the ship's contents into the sea. They were trying to make the ship lighter. But Jonah had gone below deck. There he lay down and fell into a deep sleep.

6. കപ്പല്പ്രമാണി അവന്റെ അടുക്കല് വന്നു അവനോടുനീ ഉറങ്ങുന്നതു എന്തു? എഴുന്നേറ്റു നിന്റെ ദൈവത്തെ വിളിച്ചപേക്ഷിക്ക; നാം നശിച്ചുപോകാതിരിക്കേണ്ടതിന്നു ദൈവം പക്ഷേ നമ്മെ കടാക്ഷിക്കും എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

6. The captain went down to him and said, 'How can you sleep? Get up and call out to your god for help! Maybe he'll pay attention to what's happening to us. Then we won't die.'

7. അനന്തരം അവര്വരുവിന് ; ആരുടെ നിമിത്തം ഈ അനര്ത്ഥം നമ്മുടെമേല് വന്നിരിക്കുന്നു എന്നറിയേണ്ടതിന്നു നാം ചീട്ടിടുക എന്നു തമ്മില് തമ്മില് പറഞ്ഞു. അങ്ങനെ അവര് ചീട്ടിട്ടു; ചീട്ടു യോനെക്കു വീണു.

7. The sailors said to one another, 'Come. Let's cast lots to find out who is to blame for getting us into all of this trouble.' So they did. And Jonah was picked.

8. അവര് അവനോടുആരുടെനിമിത്തം ഈ അനര്ത്ഥം നമ്മുടെമേല് വന്നു എന്നു നീ പറഞ്ഞുതരേണം; നിന്റെ തൊഴില് എന്തു? നീ എവിടെനിന്നു വരുന്നു? നിന്റെ നാടു ഏതു? നീ ഏതു ജാതിക്കാരന് ? എന്നു ചോദിച്ചു.

8. They asked him, 'What terrible thing have you done to bring all of this trouble on us? Tell us. What do you do for a living? Where do you come from? What is your country? What people do you belong to?'

9. അതിന്നു അവന് അവരോടുഞാന് ഒരു എബ്രായന് , കടലും കരയും ഉണ്ടാക്കിയ സ്വര്ഗ്ഗീയദൈവമായ യഹോവയെ ഞാന് ഭജിച്ചുവരുന്നു എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

9. He answered, 'I'm a Hebrew. I worship the Lord. He is the God of heaven. He made the sea and the land.'

10. ആ പുരുഷന്മാര് അത്യന്തം ഭയപ്പെട്ടു അവനോടുനീ എന്തിന്നു അങ്ങനെ ചെയ്തു എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു. അവന് അവരോടു അറിയിച്ചിരുന്നതുകൊണ്ടു അവന് യഹോവയുടെ സന്നിധിയില്നിന്നു ഔടിപ്പോകുന്നു എന്നു അവര് അറിഞ്ഞു.

10. They found out he was running away from the Lord. That's because he had told them. Then they became terrified. So they asked him, 'How could you do a thing like that?'

11. എന്നാല് സമുദ്രം മേലക്കുമേല് അധികം കോപിച്ചതുകൊണ്ടു അവര് അവനോടുസമുദ്രം അടങ്ങുവാന്തക്കവണ്ണം ഞങ്ങള് നിന്നോടു എന്തു ചെയ്യേണ്ടു എന്നു ചോദിച്ചു.

11. The sea was getting rougher and rougher. So they asked him, 'What should we do to you to make the sea calm down?'

12. അവന് അവരോടുഎന്നെ എടുത്തു സമുദ്രത്തില് ഇട്ടുകളവിന് ; അപ്പോള് സമുദ്രം അടങ്ങും; എന്റെ നിമിത്തം ഈ വലിയ കോള് നിങ്ങള്ക്കു തട്ടിയിരിക്കുന്നു എന്നു ഞാന് അറിയുന്നു എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

12. 'Pick me up and throw me into the sea,' he replied. 'Then it will become calm. I know it's my fault that this terrible storm has come on you.'

13. എന്നാല് അവര് കരെക്കു അടുക്കേണ്ടതിന്നു മുറുകെ തണ്ടുവലിച്ചു; എങ്കിലും സമുദ്രം കോപിച്ചു കോള് പെരുകി വന്നതുകൊണ്ടു അവര്ക്കും സാധിച്ചില്ല.

13. Instead of doing what he said, the men did their best to row back to land. But they couldn't. The sea got even rougher than before.

14. അവര് യഹോവയോടു നിലവിളിച്ചുഅയ്യോ യഹോവേ, ഈ മനുഷ്യന്റെ ജീവന് നിമിത്തം ഞങ്ങള് നശിച്ചുപോകരുതേ; നിര്ദ്ദോഷരക്തം ചൊരിയിച്ച കുറ്റം ഞങ്ങളുടെമേല് വരുത്തരുതേ; യഹോവേ, നിനക്കു ഇഷ്ടമായതു പോലെ നീ ചെയ്തിരിക്കുന്നുവല്ലോ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു

14. Then they cried out to the Lord. They prayed, 'Lord, please don't let us die for taking this man's life. After all, he might not be guilty of doing anything wrong. So don't hold us accountable for killing him. Lord, you always do what you want to.'

15. പിന്നെ അവര് യോനയെ എടുത്തു സമുദ്രത്തില് ഇട്ടുകളകയും സമുദ്രത്തിന്റെ കോപം അടങ്ങുകയും ചെയ്തു.

15. Then they took Jonah and threw him overboard. And the stormy sea became calm.

16. അപ്പോള് അവര് യഹോവയെ അത്യന്തം ഭയപ്പെട്ടു യഹോവേക്കു യാഗം കഴിച്ചു നേര്ച്ചകളും നേര്ന്നു.

16. When the men saw what had happened, they began to have great respect for the Lord. They offered a sacrifice to him. And they made promises to him.

17. യോനയെ വിഴുങ്ങേണ്ടതിന്നു യഹോവ ഒരു മഹാമത്സ്യത്തെ കല്പിച്ചാക്കിയിരുന്നു. അങ്ങനെ യോനാ മൂന്നു രാവും മൂന്നു പകലും മത്സ്യത്തിന്റെ വയറ്റില് കിടന്നു.

17. But the Lord sent a huge fish to swallow Jonah. And Jonah was inside the fish for three days and three nights.
