1. അമിത്ഥായുടെ മകനായ യോനെക്കു യഹോവയുടെ അരുളപ്പാടു ഉണ്ടായതെന്തെന്നാല്

1. One day long ago, GOD's Word came to Jonah, Amittai's son:

2. നീ പുറപ്പെട്ടു മഹാനഗരമായ നീനെവേയിലേക്കു ചെന്നു അതിന്നു വിരോധമായി പ്രസംഗിക്ക; അവരുടെ ദുഷ്ടത എന്റെ സന്നിധിയില് എത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നു.

2. 'Up on your feet and on your way to the big city of Nineveh! Preach to them. They're in a bad way and I can't ignore it any longer.'

3. എന്നാല് യോനാ യഹോവയുടെ സന്നിധിയില്നിന്നു തര്ശീശിലേക്കു ഔടിപ്പോകേണ്ടതിന്നു പുറപ്പെട്ടു യാഫോവിലേക്കു ചെന്നു, തര്ശീശിലേക്കു പോകുന്ന ഒരു കപ്പല് കണ്ടു കൂലി കൊടുത്തു യഹോവയുടെ സന്നിധിയില്നിന്നു അവരോടുകൂടെ തര്ശീശിലേക്കു പോയ്ക്കളവാന് അതില് കയറി.

3. But Jonah got up and went the other direction to Tarshish, running away from GOD. He went down to the port of Joppa and found a ship headed for Tarshish. He paid the fare and went on board, joining those going to Tarshish--as far away from GOD as he could get.

4. യഹോവയോ സമുദ്രത്തില് ഒരു പെരുങ്കാറ്റു അടിപ്പിച്ചു; കപ്പല് തകര്ന്നു പോകുവാന് തക്കവണ്ണം സമുദ്രത്തില് വലിയൊരു കോള് ഉണ്ടായി.

4. But GOD sent a huge storm at sea, the waves towering. The ship was about to break into pieces.

5. കപ്പല്ക്കാര് ഭയപ്പെട്ടു ഔരോരുത്തന് താന്താന്റെ ദേവനോടു നിലവിളിച്ചു; കപ്പലിന്നു ഭാരം കുറെക്കേണ്ടതിന്നു അവര് അതിലെ ചരകൂ സമുദ്രത്തില് എറിഞ്ഞുകളഞ്ഞു. യോനയോ കപ്പലിന്റെ അടിത്തട്ടില് ഇറങ്ങി കിടന്നു നല്ലവണ്ണം ഉറങ്ങുകയായിരുന്നു.

5. The sailors were terrified. They called out in desperation to their gods. They threw everything they were carrying overboard to lighten the ship. Meanwhile, Jonah had gone down into the hold of the ship to take a nap. He was sound asleep.

6. കപ്പല്പ്രമാണി അവന്റെ അടുക്കല് വന്നു അവനോടുനീ ഉറങ്ങുന്നതു എന്തു? എഴുന്നേറ്റു നിന്റെ ദൈവത്തെ വിളിച്ചപേക്ഷിക്ക; നാം നശിച്ചുപോകാതിരിക്കേണ്ടതിന്നു ദൈവം പക്ഷേ നമ്മെ കടാക്ഷിക്കും എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

6. The captain came to him and said, 'What's this? Sleeping! Get up! Pray to your god! Maybe your god will see we're in trouble and rescue us.'

7. അനന്തരം അവര്വരുവിന് ; ആരുടെ നിമിത്തം ഈ അനര്ത്ഥം നമ്മുടെമേല് വന്നിരിക്കുന്നു എന്നറിയേണ്ടതിന്നു നാം ചീട്ടിടുക എന്നു തമ്മില് തമ്മില് പറഞ്ഞു. അങ്ങനെ അവര് ചീട്ടിട്ടു; ചീട്ടു യോനെക്കു വീണു.

7. Then the sailors said to one another, 'Let's get to the bottom of this. Let's draw straws to identify the culprit on this ship who's responsible for this disaster.' So they drew straws. Jonah got the short straw.

8. അവര് അവനോടുആരുടെനിമിത്തം ഈ അനര്ത്ഥം നമ്മുടെമേല് വന്നു എന്നു നീ പറഞ്ഞുതരേണം; നിന്റെ തൊഴില് എന്തു? നീ എവിടെനിന്നു വരുന്നു? നിന്റെ നാടു ഏതു? നീ ഏതു ജാതിക്കാരന് ? എന്നു ചോദിച്ചു.

8. Then they grilled him: 'Confess. Why this disaster? What is your work? Where do you come from? What country? What family?'

9. അതിന്നു അവന് അവരോടുഞാന് ഒരു എബ്രായന് , കടലും കരയും ഉണ്ടാക്കിയ സ്വര്ഗ്ഗീയദൈവമായ യഹോവയെ ഞാന് ഭജിച്ചുവരുന്നു എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

9. He told them, 'I'm a Hebrew. I worship GOD, the God of heaven who made sea and land.'

10. ആ പുരുഷന്മാര് അത്യന്തം ഭയപ്പെട്ടു അവനോടുനീ എന്തിന്നു അങ്ങനെ ചെയ്തു എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു. അവന് അവരോടു അറിയിച്ചിരുന്നതുകൊണ്ടു അവന് യഹോവയുടെ സന്നിധിയില്നിന്നു ഔടിപ്പോകുന്നു എന്നു അവര് അറിഞ്ഞു.

10. At that, the men were frightened, really frightened, and said, 'What on earth have you done!' As Jonah talked, the sailors realized that he was running away from GOD.

11. എന്നാല് സമുദ്രം മേലക്കുമേല് അധികം കോപിച്ചതുകൊണ്ടു അവര് അവനോടുസമുദ്രം അടങ്ങുവാന്തക്കവണ്ണം ഞങ്ങള് നിന്നോടു എന്തു ചെയ്യേണ്ടു എന്നു ചോദിച്ചു.

11. They said to him, 'What are we going to do with you--to get rid of this storm?' By this time the sea was wild, totally out of control.

12. അവന് അവരോടുഎന്നെ എടുത്തു സമുദ്രത്തില് ഇട്ടുകളവിന് ; അപ്പോള് സമുദ്രം അടങ്ങും; എന്റെ നിമിത്തം ഈ വലിയ കോള് നിങ്ങള്ക്കു തട്ടിയിരിക്കുന്നു എന്നു ഞാന് അറിയുന്നു എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

12. Jonah said, 'Throw me overboard, into the sea. Then the storm will stop. It's all my fault. I'm the cause of the storm. Get rid of me and you'll get rid of the storm.'

13. എന്നാല് അവര് കരെക്കു അടുക്കേണ്ടതിന്നു മുറുകെ തണ്ടുവലിച്ചു; എങ്കിലും സമുദ്രം കോപിച്ചു കോള് പെരുകി വന്നതുകൊണ്ടു അവര്ക്കും സാധിച്ചില്ല.

13. But no. The men tried rowing back to shore. They made no headway. The storm only got worse and worse, wild and raging.

14. അവര് യഹോവയോടു നിലവിളിച്ചുഅയ്യോ യഹോവേ, ഈ മനുഷ്യന്റെ ജീവന് നിമിത്തം ഞങ്ങള് നശിച്ചുപോകരുതേ; നിര്ദ്ദോഷരക്തം ചൊരിയിച്ച കുറ്റം ഞങ്ങളുടെമേല് വരുത്തരുതേ; യഹോവേ, നിനക്കു ഇഷ്ടമായതു പോലെ നീ ചെയ്തിരിക്കുന്നുവല്ലോ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു

14. Then they prayed to GOD, 'O GOD! Don't let us drown because of this man's life, and don't blame us for his death. You are GOD. Do what you think is best.'

15. പിന്നെ അവര് യോനയെ എടുത്തു സമുദ്രത്തില് ഇട്ടുകളകയും സമുദ്രത്തിന്റെ കോപം അടങ്ങുകയും ചെയ്തു.

15. They took Jonah and threw him overboard. Immediately the sea was quieted down.

16. അപ്പോള് അവര് യഹോവയെ അത്യന്തം ഭയപ്പെട്ടു യഹോവേക്കു യാഗം കഴിച്ചു നേര്ച്ചകളും നേര്ന്നു.

16. The sailors were impressed, no longer terrified by the sea, but in awe of GOD. They worshiped GOD, offered a sacrifice, and made vows.

17. യോനയെ വിഴുങ്ങേണ്ടതിന്നു യഹോവ ഒരു മഹാമത്സ്യത്തെ കല്പിച്ചാക്കിയിരുന്നു. അങ്ങനെ യോനാ മൂന്നു രാവും മൂന്നു പകലും മത്സ്യത്തിന്റെ വയറ്റില് കിടന്നു.

17. Then GOD assigned a huge fish to swallow Jonah. Jonah was in the fish's belly three days and nights.
