1. യോനെക്കു ഇതു അത്യന്തം അനിഷ്ടമായി, അവന്നു കോപം വന്നു.

1. Jonah was really upset and angry.

2. അവന് യഹോവയോടു പ്രാര്ത്ഥിച്ചുഅയ്യോ, യഹോവേ, ഞാന് എന്റെ ദേശത്തു ആയിരുന്നപ്പോള് ഞാന് പറഞ്ഞ വാക്കു ഇതു തന്നേ അല്ലയോ? അതുകൊണ്ടായിരുന്നു ഞാന് തര്ശീശിലേക്കു ബദ്ധപ്പെട്ടു ഔടിപ്പോയതു; നീ കൃപയും കരുണയും ദീര്ഘക്ഷമയും മഹാദയയുമുള്ള ദൈവമായി അനര്ത്ഥത്തെക്കുറിച്ചു അനുതപിക്കുന്നവന് എന്നു ഞാന് അറിഞ്ഞു.

2. So he prayed: Our LORD, I knew from the very beginning that you wouldn't destroy Nineveh. That's why I left my own country and headed for Spain. You are a kind and merciful God, and you are very patient. You always show love, and you don't like to punish anyone, not even foreigners.

3. ആകയാല് യഹോവേ, എന്റെ പ്രാണനെ എടുത്തുകൊള്ളേണമേ; ജീവിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നതിനെക്കാള് മരിക്കുന്നതു എനിക്കു നന്നു എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

3. Now let me die! I'd be better off dead.

4. നീ കോപിക്കുന്നതു വിഹിതമോ എന്നു യഹോവ ചോദിച്ചു.

4. The LORD replied, 'What right do you have to be angry?'

5. അനന്തരം യോനാ നഗരം വിട്ടുചെന്നു നഗരത്തിന്റെ കിഴക്കേവശത്തു ഇരുന്നു; അവിടെ ഒരു കുടിലുണ്ടാക്കി നഗരത്തിന്നു എന്തു ഭവിക്കും എന്നു കാണുവോളം അതിന് കീഴെ തണലില് പാര്ത്തു.

5. Jonah then left through the east gate of the city and made a shelter to protect himself from the sun. He sat under the shelter, waiting to see what would happen to Nineveh.

6. യോനയെ അവന്റെ സങ്കടത്തില്നിന്നു വിടുവിപ്പാന് തക്കവണ്ണം അവന്റെ തലെക്കു തണല് ആയിരിക്കേണ്ടതിന്നു യഹോവയായ ദൈവം ഒരു ആവണകൂ കല്പിച്ചുണ്ടാക്കി, അതു അവന്നു മീതെ വളര്ന്നു പൊങ്ങി; യോനാ ആവണകൂനിമിത്തം അത്യന്തം സന്തോഷിച്ചു.

6. The LORD made a vine grow up to shade Jonah's head and protect him from the sun. Jonah was very happy to have the vine,

7. പിറ്റെന്നാള് പുലര്ന്നപ്പോള് ദൈവം ഒരു പുഴുവിനെ കല്പിച്ചാക്കി; അതു ആവണകൂ കുത്തിക്കളഞ്ഞു, അതു വാടിപ്പോയി.

7. but early the next morning the LORD sent a worm to chew on the vine, and the vine dried up.

8. സൂര്യന് ഉദിച്ചപ്പോള് ദൈവം അത്യഷ്ണമുള്ളോരു കിഴക്കന് കാറ്റു കല്പിച്ചുവരുത്തി; വെയില് യോനയുടെ തലയില് കൊള്ളുകയാല് അവന് ക്ഷീണിച്ചു മരിച്ചാല് കൊള്ളാം എന്നു ഇച്ഛിച്ചുജീവിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നതിനെക്കാല് മരിക്കുന്നതു എനിക്കു നന്നു എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

8. During the day the LORD sent a scorching wind, and the sun beat down on Jonah's head, making him feel faint. Jonah was ready to die, and he shouted, 'I wish I were dead!'

9. ദൈവം യോനയോടുനീ ആവണകൂനിമിത്തം കോപിക്കുന്നതു വിഹിതമോ എന്നു ചോദിച്ചതിന്നു അവന് ഞാന് മരണപര്യന്തം കോപിക്കുന്നതു വിഹിതം തന്നേ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

9. But the LORD asked, 'Jonah, do you have the right to be angry about the vine?' 'Yes, I do,' he answered, 'and I'm angry enough to die.'

10. അതിന്നു യഹേഅവ നീ അദ്ധ്വനിക്കയോ വളര്ത്തുകയൊ ചെയ്യാതെ ഒരു രാത്രിയില് ഉണ്ടായ്വരികയും ഒരു രാത്രിയില് നശിച്ചുപോകയും ചെയ്തിരിക്കുന്ന ആവണക്കിനെക്കുറിച്ചു നിനക്കു അയ്യോഭാവം തോന്നുന്നുവല്ലോ.

10. But the LORD said: You are concerned about a vine that you did not plant or take care of, a vine that grew up in one night and died the next.

11. എന്നാല് വലങ്കയ്യും ഇടങ്കയ്യും തമ്മില് തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞുകൂടാത്ത ഒരു ല്കഷത്തിരുപതിനായിരത്തില് ചില്വാനം മനുഷ്യരും അനേകം മൃഗങ്ങളുമുള്ള മഹാനഗരമായ നീനെവേയോടു എനിക്കു അയ്യോഭാവം തോന്നരുതോ എന്നു ചോദിച്ചു.

11. In that city of Nineveh there are more than a hundred twenty thousand people who cannot tell right from wrong, and many cattle are also there. Don't you think I should be concerned about that big city?
